Trends in the periodic table

Lana Duncan Chemistry Higher English 10 cards

Cards in this deck (10)

  1. 1What is the covalent radius?Half the distance between two covalently bonded atoms.
  2. 2What is the trend of covalent radius across a period? It decreases as nuclear charge increases. This means electrons are pulled closer to the nucleus.
  3. 3What is the trend of covalent radius down a group? It increases as there are more electron shells. Each shell shields the outer electrons from the nucleus, so the outer electrons are less strongly attracted to the nucleus
  4. 4What is electronegativity?Electronegativity is a measure of attraction for electrons in a covalent bond.
  5. 5What happens to electronegativity down a group? It decreases due to the shielding effect. So electrons are less strongly attracted to the atom.
  6. 6What happens to the electronegativity across a period? It increases as the nuclear charge increases. This causes atoms to attract electrons more strongly.
  7. 7What is the ionisation energy? The energy required to remover one mole of electrons from one mole of atoms in the gaseous state.
  8. 8What happens to the ionisation energy going down a group? It decreases. As the electron is being removed from the outer electron shell which is further away from the nucleus as you go down the group.
  9. 9What happens to ionisation energy going across a period? It increases. As the nuclear charge increases meaning the outer electrons are more strongly attracted to the nucleus.
  10. 10Explain why the second ionisation energy of sodium is much higher than the first ionisation energy of sodium.Na has the electron arrangement: 2,8,1
The second ionisation energy would remove an electron from the second shell, which has a stronger nuclear pull than the third shell. In the second ionisation energy an electron is being removed from a full energy shell.
