Flowchart content
Multimedia learning
The core of multimedia
learning from the viewpoint of psychology is
combined
comprehension of text and pictures
Spoken text, written text, maps, drawings, graphs and sound
Descriptive representations
Depictive representations
Multimedia learning occurs when and individual understands what is represented
It consist in symbols, are more powerful in expressing abstract knownledge.
Example: Mathematical expression such as V= s3
It consist in icons, are therefore more useful to draw inferences.
Example:Photographs, drawings and paintings.
Mental representations
Multiple memory systems
When learners understand texts and pictures, they construct multiple mental representations in cognitive system
Working memory
Sensory register
Long-term memory
Working memory consist of a central executive and different subsystems for the storage of information
Auditory working memory
Visual working memory
There are multiple sensory channel according to the multiple sensory modalities between the outside world and working memory
Text and picture comprehension require prior knownledge that is stored in long-term memory. Cognitive schemata
Text and picture comprehension take place in cognitive architecture incluiding a working memory of limited capacity,modality-specific sensory registers as information input systems, and long term-memory
Verbal information and pictorial information is transmitted to working memory trought the visual channel and the auditory channel. The channels have limited capacity to process and store information
Further information processing in working memory takes place in two different representational channels: the verbal channel and the pictorial channel. Information from written or spoken text is processing the verbal channel.
Integrated comprehension of text and pictures
(Multiple memory system, working memory, multiple mental representation, congnitive theory of multimedia learning)
Listening comprehension
Visual picture comprehension
Auditory picture comprehension
Auditory verbal information enters the auditory register trought the ear and is then forwarded trought the auditory channel to auditory working memory. The information is passed trought the verbal channel to propositional working memory, leads to propositional representation
Visual pictorial information enters the visual register trought the eye and is then forwaded through the visual channel to visual working memory, where it results in a visual perceptual representation of the picture
If a sound is understood ,auditory pictorial information enters the auditory register through the ear and then forwaded through the auditory channel to auditory working memory
