1. MULTI TASKING

   • To the user it appears that we can multitask and have lots of programs open at once however the resources suchas memory and the processor and being shared amonst tasks
   • it splits up the process into little tasks instead of having one long large task and instead does a little slice of one task and then another slice and the cycle repeats until the task has been complete

2. FILE MANAGEMENT

   • similar to memory management the operating system must identify wher files are stored for long term storage
   • the user does not need to know the specific track sector and surfaces address

3. MEMORY MANAGEMENT

   • OS allocates memory between the different programs that are open at the same time.
   • Programmers are users donot need to know where in memory data is being held it is the purpose of operating system to do this.

4. THE USER INTERFACE

   • the user can interact with the operating system by using command line interface text based(raspbian). graphical user interface(contains windows)
   • types of interface: windows,icons,menus,pointers,visual,windows 10 ,windows 8 , android and mac OS

5. DRIVERS

   • driver - a piece of software used to control a piece of hardware
   • Drivers allow a peripheral device to be connected to the computer and to be used by an operating system
   • -you may get drivers for graphics cards, mouse, sound card, network interface cards
   • -Drivers are OS specific and are regularly updated

6. PHERIPHERALS MANAGEMENT

   • the operating system manages the way the hardware interacts with the system
   • peripheral is hardware that is not directly connected to the cpu (for example keyboards, mouse,even hard disk drive
   • An operating system managed all of the peripheral devices that are connected to the computer - this allows them to be disabled,or drivers be updated
