SECONDARY STORAGE
MAGNETIC HARD DRIVES
- Stores data using magnetic media such as HDD and Floppy disks.
- They have platters and a read/write head to check the magnetic properties of the platter
- They have a high capacity and they are extremely cheap
It is not resistant as you could drop it or get it wet and it wouldn't be readable
SOLID STATE DRIVES
- It stores data directly onto silicon microchips with an electrical charge
- It is durable so we can use it for a long amount of time. It is also a lot faster than most secondary storage
- They are very expensive and each storage location can only be written to a certain amount of times because as higher voltage has to be used each time to flash the block screen. An example is a USB stick
OPTICAL DISK DRIVES
- Stores data by making marks in a pattern that can usually be read back with a beam of laser light
- They are cheap in cost and it will still be readable if you drop it or get it wet
- It has a slower access time compared to most other secondary devices
