Atoms

Map content
Atoms
Structure
- Tiny particles that everything is made up of
- Radius of 0.1 nm (1x10^-10m)
Nucleus and electrons
- Nucleus is the middle of the atom that contains protons and neutrons
- Protons are positive and neutrons have no charge. This makes the nucleus positive
- Electrons move around the nucleus with a negative charge. They occupy shells around the nucleus.
- Nucleus is the middle of the atom that contains protons and neutrons
Electrical Charge
- Number of protons always equals the number of electrons in an atom.
- E.g. Atom has 7 protons and electrons. Each proton has a charge of +1 and electron has a charge of -1. There are 7 each so they cancel eachother out so there is no charge.
- If more are added there is a charge and becomes an ion.
- Number of protons always equals the number of electrons in an atom.
