Object-Oriented Programming

  1. Instantiation

    • Creating new object from class definition
    • Memory is allocated for object fields
    • Happens via constructor - special method which is called when object is created
  2. Class

    • Characteristics
    • Behaviors
    • Property/Attribute fields
  3. Encapsulation

    • combining a class with procedures and functions that manipulate it to form new data types
      • Public methods
        • Private data methods
        • Interaction Interface
  4. Object

    • Constructor
      • Implicit
      • Explicit
    • Reference to object assigned to reference variable of class type
  5. Inheritance

    • Define an object
    • Making hierarchy
    • Descendants inheriting access to ancestor's code and data
  6. Association Aggregation

    • Two objects related to each other. Own lifecycle.
    • Aggregation: Special form form association where object has ownership of child object
  7. Composition Aggregation

    • Specialized form of aggregation where a child object has no independent lifecycle. Parent connected to child
    • Sprite-Body-Arm
  8. Polymorphism

    • Giving an action one name that is shared up and down object hierarchy.
    • Each object in hierarchy implementing the action in a way appropriate to itself.
  9. Overriding

    • Enables child class to provide different implementation method
    • Same name, signature,and parameters
    • Handles datatypes through uniform interface
    • Generic method could be defined in parent class while child class provides specific implementation
