Graphical User Interface (GUI)

1. Description

   • Most modern PCs use a graphical user interface (GUI)
   • Small meaningful pictures called icons represent instructions that are available to the user and each one is selected by the mouse pointer
   • Provide help if users have difficulty
   • The purpose of a command button is often described and explained if the cursor is hovered over it
   • A help menu provided a searchable database that explains how to perform various tasks

3. Advantages

   • Only a low level of ICT skills is required for the easy-to-use, intuitive interface
   • No need to learn any instructions
   • Pictures are more meaningful than words, so small children or people with reading difficulties can use this
   • You can alter the way the GUI is displayed to personalise it

4. Disadvantages

   • It is large and complex
   • Can take up a lot of the computer's resources
   • May run slowly
