Secondary Storage

  1. Magnetic

    • Hard Drive
    • example
    • Magnetic has a higher capacity then solid state. Therefore it can store many more programs and files and is more cost effective
    • Isn't that durable compared to solid state and has a slower read/write speed. This means it cannot download and save programs or files as quickly and it may break if you drop it due to moving parts.
  2. Solid State

    • SD card
    • USB drive
    • Solid state is very durable and has a higher read/write speed compared to magnetic as there are no moving parts and it can download and save files quicker.
    • Has a lower capacity compared to magnetic. Therefore it cannot store as much data/programs. this also makes it slightly less cost effective.
  3. Optical

    • CD
    • Optical is very easy to transfer to several different people as they are a disc and is very portable compared to magnetic.
    • Unfortunately, optical is less durable in comparison to magnetic as it is quite fragile so if you drop it on the floor or in water it may break into lots of different pieces.
    • DVD
  4. Non-volatile storage. It keeps your programs, operating systems and files stored in the computer system

    • Non volatile means that it keeps programs and files stored permanently even when the computer is turned off
