Threats to Cyber Security
weak and default passwords
- A password that is simple and would be easy to guess i.e. password or 1234. A password that is a combination of lower and upper case, numbers and symbols.
misconfigured access rights
- When you are given access to something that you shouldn't have access too. If a person were to accidentally grant someone access to their data the person would be misconfigured to then use that data. You should always read before agreeing to anything to do with your data.
removable media
- Removable media are data storage devices capable of computer system removal without powering off the system. Removable media devices are used for backup, storage or transportation of data. i.e. hard drives and USB's You should always keep these devices in a safe place and/or have a secure password attached to them so that your data can only be accessed by you
unpatched and/or outdated software
- If your device is not fully up to date then you are vulnerable to hackers as your software is not developed. To help protect against hackers, you should always update your device if there is an update available
social engineering techniques
- Social engineering is the art of manipulating people so they give up confidential information. The types of information these criminals are seeking can vary, but when individuals are targeted the criminals are usually trying to trick you into giving them your passwords or bank information, or access your computer to secretly install malicious software–that will give them access to your passwords and bank information as well as giving them control over your computer. To prevent your exploitation, you should never hand out data to people even if they claim they work at your bank etc.
malicious code
- Any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, client, or computer network. Malware does the damage after it is implanted or introduced in some way into a target's computer and can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software. You should install Anti-Virus/Malware Software and keep it up to date.
