Polymer
Polimer comes from the greek poli=many and mer=molecules
- Polymers can be tuned as we want for the job that we want, their properties allow us to build a polimer as a LEGO till the polimer fit the Job
Polymers is how we know the union of many monomers.
- It can be represented as
- A-A-A-A
- (-A-)x Where x is the variable of how many times A repeats
- It can be represented as
As we can see the name of polymers varies from the functional group or molecule that is repeated
- Polyesters
- Is formed when you have many "ester" (functional group)
- Examples
- Uses
- Polymers are used in the computers manufacturing
- We use plastic in tools, for example the heat-schrincable cover for cables
- Polymers are used for isolating the charges in a a elecetrical system
- Polymers
- Poliethylene is used in common plastic bags
- Polipropilene is a hard plastic that can support straight impacts therefore is used in training equipment
- Polystyrene is a polymer used for make heat resistant (low cost) glasses or for packing fragile things
- Uses
- Polyesters
Characteristics
- It can change a lot, the properties depend of 3 factors
- Connectivity
- If the repeating molecule repats in a linear pattern or a branched pattern
- Molecular Weight
- How many times the constant molecule repeats
- Composition
- If we add another molecule to the reapiting pattern the properties chnge
- Homopolymers are the polymers that have only one functional group
- heteropolimers are the ones that have a altered composition, so they have more than one functional group
- Example: (-a-) "normal" but if we add "b" the properties change (-a-)(-b-)(-a-)
- If we add another molecule to the reapiting pattern the properties chnge
- Something we have to mention is that when we do a polymer double or triple bonds are eliminated
- Connectivity
- It can change a lot, the properties depend of 3 factors
Types
- Thermoplastics are molecules that have no covalent bonding, just intermolecular
- Thermosets have many covalent bonds in the chain and have a 3d structure
- Elastomers are molecules with a chain structure, therefore they can stretch
- Steric Structure
- Side Chains
- Stereoregular
- Regular Chain (pattern)
- Atactic
- Unregular Chain
- Stereoregular
- Side Chains
