HTML- Lesson 1

  1. What is it

    • A code used by websites to describe the visual content to the browser
    • Hypertext Markup Language
    • A language for documents to be displayed in a web browser
    • The code describes the structure of a web page for the browser to depict it the way we see it
    • Invented by Tim Berners-Lee
  2. WWW and the Internet

    • www = world wide web
    • A collection of websites all over the world
    • Websites are stored in web servers all over the world
    • Browsers are search engines which match the website address to its IP address in the Domain Name System.
      • The Domain Name System is a system which contains all the website addresses (URL code) and their matching IP address.
      • Once the IP code is found, the browser connects with the server and starts transferring data. The server sends the HTML code for the requested web page and the browser then uses that to structure the website.
  3. Example (by order of line on a page of HTML code for a website)

    • 1. The < !DOCTYPE html > at the beginning of most html web page codes defines the document to be HTML5 (HTML code)
    • 2. The <html> is the root element of the HTML page
    • 3. The <head> element contains meta information about the document.
      • DEFINITION: meta information is just information about the web page (e.g. its title, location or subject)
    • 4. The <title> element specifies the title for the document.
    • 5. The <body> element contains all visible content of the web page.
      • The only information shown on any web page is that which is show between the 2 </body> elements.
    • 6. The <h1> element defines a large heading.
    • 7. Finally, the <p> element defines a paragraph.
    • Extra: <br> is for a break in the text.
  4. Why is it important to learn about HTML

    • If you create any websites, you can easily recode it to change its appearance or add any extra information you might want.
    • You can understand the HTML coding behind other people's web coding and maybe grab a few ideas.
    • You increase your potential job list- plenty of businesses will want people who know how to design a good web page.
