Computer Performance

  1. Cores

    • WHY If you have more cores , the CPU can carry out even more instructions in the same period of time.
    • HOW Getting a dual core processor would enable the CPU to fetch and execute two instructions in the same time it takes a single core processor , therefore it will be faster
    • WHAT Cores manipulate how many fetch decode execute cycles can be done/ second
  2. Clock speed

    • WHAT How many cycles a CPU can do in a second (measured in Hz)
    • WHY increasing the clock speed will mean that the computer works more effectively and faster
    • HOW you could get a processor with a faster clock speed
  3. Cache

    • WHY The bigger the cache is, the more quickly the commonly used instructions and data can be brought into the processor and used.
    • WHAT memory built right onto the processor. The most commonly used instructions and data are stored in the cache so that they are close at hand.
    • HOW if you upgrade to more cache , you will have more space in cache and will need to use less of RAM
  4. RAM

    • WHAT main storage of data that is currently in use ; it is only temporary or volatile meaning the data is not stored when the computer switches off
    • WHY increased amounts of RAM will enable the device to store more data
    • HOW you can get larger amounts of RAM so that you don't need to resort to virtual memory
