algorithms
vocab
- sequence- the order in which tasks are to be carried out
- sub-tasks- small steps that make up a bigger task
- iteration- when a task is repeated until there is a desired outcome
- selection- when a question is asked and, depending on the outcome, the program takes multiple coureses of action
- variable- a container which is used to store values
- operand- the subject of a mathematical operation
flow charts
- terminator (start/stop symbol)
- process
- input/output
- (rhomubs)
- descision/selection
variable rules
- you always declare a variable
- never a single letter
- not too long because of typos
- can't use reserved words
- can't start with a number
- python is case sensetive
- CamelCase
- Snake_Case
order of operation
- if, elif, else are executed from top to bottom
- as soon as the condition evaluates to be true, the path is taken
- no further conditions are evaluated
sorting
- bubble sort
- slow/inefficient
- insertion sort
- easy to code
- bit faster than bubble but slower than merge
- merge sort
- splits the string in half and half again etc until there is a group of 2 then these are put into the correct order
- the strings are then put back together in the correct order
- fastest method of sorting
- might need extra space to store the seperated lists though
- difficult to code
- bubble sort
searching
- binary search
- only works on ordered data
- linear search
- binary search
