Map content

stationary waves

  1. formed whenever 2 waves of the same amplitude and wavelength travelling in opposite direction superimpose

  2. a stationary wave has no speed as it does not travel and it also does not transfer energy between 2 points like a progressive wave.

  3. node: a point on a stationary wave with 0 amplitude. it is formed when 2 waves meet with a phase difference of 180 degrees, at this point they combine destructively.

  4. an antinode is a point on a stationary wave with maximum amplitude. it is formed when 2 waves meet each with a phase difference of 360 degrees, at this point they combine constructively

  5. A microwave emitter placed a distance away from a metal plate that reflects the emitted wave. By moving a detector along the path of the wave, the nodes and antinodes could be detected.

  6. separation between 2 adjacent nodes= half a wavelength

    • separation between adjacent node and antinode= quarter of a wavelength
  7. stationary waves in air columns

    • fundamental frequency- the minimum frequency of a standing wave for a given system or arrangement
  8. eliminating errors- tb pg 238
