Atoms + Elements
Atoms have a small nucleus surrounded by electrons
- Nucleus is in the middle
- Nucleus has a positive charge
- Overall because of the protons
- It contains protons and Neutrons
- Protons and positively charged
- Neutrons have no charge
- Neutral
- Size wise the nucleus is tiny compared to the rest of the atoms
Electrons
- They're negatively charged
- They move around the nucleus
- They're tiny but cover a lot of space
- They occupy shells around the nucleus
- These shells explain the whole of chemistry
Number of protons equals the number of electrons
- The charge of the electrons is the same size as the charge on the protons
- Just opposite
- This means the number of protons always equals the number of electrons in an atom
- If some electrons are added or removed the atom becomes charged and then is an ion
- The charge of the electrons is the same size as the charge on the protons
