Inequality

  1. Essay beginning

    • Inequality is the major issue that development practitioners and development theory would need to continue addressing. Inequality, unlike other development issues, is not applicable only to global South. It is increasing across the world and the gap between the poor and the reach is increasing tremendously.
    • Inequality exists btw. countries, or btw. people within countries, between groups or within family.
  2. I

  3. Is it Poverty?

    • Inequality and poverty are linked but they are not the same thing. Poverty is defined as lack of something, food, income, etc, while inequality is a measure of relative position of people. Eg. If poor are malnourished because they cannot afford food that is available there is a link between poverty and inequality.
  4. Types

    • Income
      • Does increase in income make everyone better off or does growth only benefit the better off and increase inequality?
      • Has direct impact on types of inequalities
    • Maternal Health
      • Maternal morbidity is both a cause and a product of poverty. Reflects unequal access to resources based on class, caste, wealth & power. Included in MDG #5. Eg. In Malavi 1 women dies oout 88 giving birth, while in Italy 1 out of 25000.
    • Education
      • Less chances to succeed in life
    • Gender
      • Eg. In some societies women are less educated than men which makes them more powerless then men.
    • Environmental
      • Energy use impacts climate change. Rich countries pollute much more than poor and poor countries have to compromise more on strict rules for environmental regulations and compromise their economies.
