Multi-Store Model

  1. Sensory Memory

    • Composed of several stores: Eyes, ears, tongue, nose, skin
    • When attention is focussed on one of the stores the info passes into STM
  2. Short Term Memory

    • Limited Capacity so information is in fragile state
    • Information can DECAY if not rehearsed, or be DISPLACED
  3. Atkinson & Shiffrin

  4. Long Term Memory

    • Information must be rehearsed for it to transfer to LTM
    • The more it is rehearsed, the longer it stays in LTM
  5. PRIMACY EFFECT- The first few items of a list are recalled best by participants as these are the ones they've rehearsed and transferred into LTM

  6. REGENCY EFFECT - Last numbers in a list recalled better than middle ones as they're still in STM

  7. REHEARSAL - People don't spend time rehearsing things that still transfer into LTM. Some things can't be rehearsed (smells)

  8. OVERSIMPLIFIED - There are several stores for STM and LTM not just one, as proved by brain damaged patients.
