Position Measurements
Position measures are statistical parameters that allow defining a data set. That is, position measures help to know what a data set is like.
Measures of central position
- indicate the central value of a distribution, that is, they serve to find a representative value of the center of a data set.
- Mean
- is the average of all the data in the sample.
- To calculate the mean , add all the values and then divide them by the total number of observations.
- is the average of all the data in the sample.
- Median
- is the middle value of all data ordered from smallest to largest.
- The calculation of the median depends on whether the total number of data is odd or even
- If the total number of data is odd , the median will be the value that is right in the middle of the data
- If the total number of data points is even , the median will be the mean of the two data points in the middle
- The calculation of the median depends on whether the total number of data is odd or even
- is the middle value of all data ordered from smallest to largest.
- Mode
- it is the value that repeats the most of the data se
- to calculate the mode of a set of statistical data, it is enough to count the number of times that each datum appears in the sample, and the most repeated datum will be the mode
- it is the value that repeats the most of the data se
- Mean
- indicate the central value of a distribution, that is, they serve to find a representative value of the center of a data set.
Non-central position measurements
- Quartiles
- Quartile are the three values that divide an ordered data set into four equal parts. Therefore, the first, second and third quartiles respectively represent 25%, 50% and 75% of the statistical data set.
- Quintiles
- Quintiles are four values that divide an ordered data set into five equal parts. So the first, second, third and fourth quintiles represent 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of the sample data, respectively.
- deciles
- Deciles are nine values that divide an ordered data set into ten equal parts. So that the first, second, third,… decile represents 10%, 20%, 30%,… of the sample or population.
- Percentiles
- Percentiles are the values that divide an ordered data set into one hundred equal parts. So a percentile indicates the value below which a percentage of the data set is found.
