User Interfaces

  1. Graphical User Interface (GUI)

    • Windows
    • Menu's
    • Icons
    • Pointers
    • Porvides visually appealing which is effective for inexperienced users. This is because they are intuitive this means you can work it out yourself
    • Take up a lot of processing power and a lot of storage compared to other inteface
  2. Form Based Interface

    • Where a computer outputs seperate prompt and repsonse fields for a nnumber of inputs
    • Prompt the user to ask each question in turn
    • Makes the user input information in the correct order and ensures nothing is missed
    • Ensures the data is correct (Verification) by having specific areas to input the data
    • Prompts where data should be entered
  3. Menu based Interface

    • Menus lead to further menus that lead to further menus each time until you have reached the solution of target information
    • List of choices on screen
    • Choice made by user leading to further menus
    • Used when wanting to limit choices for people with little Knowledge to simplify the system
    • Restrict users of areas the developer wants to be seen
    • Easy and intuitive
    • Good to use with a touch screen
  4. Natural Language Interface

    • The computer will ask a question which the user responds to, which gives the impression the user is talking to the computer
    • Computer limits itself to questions that only have sensible answers. If the user leaves the exprected respeonse the somputer will whatever the task it has been set it. The obly answers will be sensible
    • They are poor in noisy enviroments if they use spoken controls.
    • Can get confused with accents
    • They are intuitive
  5. Comand Line Interface

    • These require the user to write single line commands for the computer to carry out. The user has to know what commands are available and appropriate for what the user wished to do
      • User needs to know the available commands
      • The commands must be understood by the user
      • User needs to understand the way the material is stored in the computer system.
    • This interface is powerful in the hands of an experienced user but can be frustrating
    • No command restrictions. Command line interface allows anyone with knowledge of the commands and their uses but you also need to understand something about how the computer operates. particulararly how the information is stored
