High level and low level programming languages

  1. High level language

    • Editor
      • It will colour code key words in high level coding languages.
      • Allows the user to edit and change code.
    • Syntax checker
      • Syntax checker goes through the code searching for syntax errors and highlights them.
      • Syntax checker suggest how to fix syntax errors.
  2. Assembly Language

    • Assembly language is made up of command words called mnemomics
      • Examples of mnemomics
        • MOV commands moves data from one location to another
        • ADD command carries out an add operation
  3. Machine code

    • Made up of 'operation code' and 'memory address'
      • Operation code is the part of machine code that specifies what to do with the data.
      • Memory address is the part of the code where the data is read from and written to.
    • The CPU can only understand machine code, all other coding languages have to be translated into machine code
      • The data is translated by programs called compilers or assemblers
    • machine code is specific to the CPU.
  4. Compiler

    • Converts the source code into machine code so that it can be executed as a stand alone program file. It converts the code in one go.
  5. Translator

    • Converts high level code into low level code.
  6. Interpreter

    • Converts the source code into machine code so that it can be executed as a stand alone program file. It converts the code line by line.
  7. Opcode

    • Opcode tells the processor the job that needs to be done such as add or subtract.
  8. Operand

    • Operand stores the values that are going to be acted on.
