Mind map: Creation and divine aspirations in Frankenstein

Map content

Creation and Divine Aspirations

  1. Victor usurps the role of God by creating the creature.

    • However, in this secular world, his main crime might just be failing to nurture his creation.
      • pg. 102: "you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature, to whom thou art bound"
    • The language Victor uses to describe his work suggests that it is shameful/unholy.
      • pg. 55: "the horrors of my secret toil", "unhallowed", "filthy creation"
    • Context: Religion was strong during the 19th Century.
  2. Shelley creates a secular world.

    • There is no vengeful God to punish Victor, just a vengeful monster.
      • pg. 173: "Man, you shall repent of the injuries you inflict."
    • Christian myth serves only to provide anologies.
      • pg. 134: "I remembered Adam's supplication to his Creator. But where was mine?"
    • Context: A world showing the fears about beliefs moving away from God and towards science?
