Hardware Specifications
- Computer hardware is the physical part of a computer
- Central Processing Unit
- sometimes called a microprocessor and is normally mounted on a single motherboard for personal computers or small workstations
- Output Divice (monitor)
- Backing storeage
- The backing store is normally a hard disk, which retains the data written on to it after the computer system has been switched off
- Input devices
- Internal Memory (RAM and ROM)
- Computer’s working memory that is made up of a series of chips as shown in the illustration. The actual memory is volatile, which means that the contents of the storage are lost when the computer is switched off.

Cloud and Thin Client
- Clound
- can be defined as Internet-based computing
- Resources
- software
- Information
- combination of layers in a cloud
- Software as a Service (SaaS) – this is where software is supplied over the Internet
- Platform as a Service (PaaS) – the cloud provider supplies a platform to run the application software
- Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) – in this case the cloud is providing online (or virtual) hardware, rather than the business buying their own
- Scalability
- which means that the service can be increased or decreased as required
- A client can pay for more space on the cloud
- which means that the service can be increased or decreased as required
- can be defined as Internet-based computing
- Thin client
- low specification computer
- contains client software that is used to interface with the application software or operation system that is provided by the network server
- unable to function on their own
- often used with a server for single functions
- online web access or email or surfing the Internet or print serving
- The operation is as follows:
- The thin client computer has the ability to start up and connect to a powerful server via the network
- The thin client software is mostly made up of a graphic user interface (GUI), so that the user can see all the tools, features and data from a normal software package
- The powerful server is running the software package and carrying out all the processing
- Advantages
- The installation, updating or removal of software only needs to be added at the server which saves time and creates a consistent system
- Backing up and recovery are fast as it can all take place at the server and there is no need for any user involvement.
- It makes use of low specification computers as thin clients; they are easy to maintain and set up.
- There is less maintenance on a thin client computer to carry out as hardware and software upgrades are not necessary; this saves time and the cost of upgrading PCs.
- Scurity is improved as all data can be kept away from the network in a secure location.
- Disadvantages
- There is a limit to the number of thin clients that can be run from a server; this is dependent upon the specification of the server.
- The system is dependent upon the server so, if it fails, the whole system fails; this can be protected against by using a mirrored server that can automatically take over in the event of a failure
- Users of thin client computers may find the operation of software slower when the server is heavily loaded.
