Godden & Baddeley (Key Study for CDT) Description
AIM
- To provide evidence for the Cue Dependency Theory
PROCEDURE
- Godden & Baddeley used a team of 18 divers. They were split into two groups. One group was asked to learn a list of words on a beach and the other group learned the words underwater. One group was asked to recall the words in the same location of learning and the other group were asked to recall them in a different place. For example, if the original place of learning was underwater, the divers would be asked to recall them on land.
RESULTS
- It was found that words were recalled much better when in the same place of original learning. 40% more words were forgotten when in a different location.
CONCLUSION
- In conclusion, Godden and Baddeley provided evidence for Cue Dependency Theory as it shows that the more cues (e.g. location), the less likely we are to forget.
