Describe how to carry out, and explain what happens in, simple distillation.
- Take a mixture of acetone and water in a distilation flask
- Put a thermometer in it
- connect the flask to a water condenser
- The condenser has cold water running through its jacks to keep the temp cool
- Keep a beaker at the outlet of the condenser
- heat the mixture, keeping and eye on the temperature
- when the temperature hits 56 the acetone starts to vapourise
- these vapours condense in the water condenser
- The condensed acetone gets collected in the beaker
- when all the acetone condenses water is left in the beaker

AS THERE IS SUFFICIENT DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEIR BOILING POINTS THESE COMPONENTS CAN BE SEPARATED WITH SIMPLE DISTILATION, IT DOESNT WORK WHEN THE DISTANNCE BETWEEN BOILING POINTS IS LESS THANK 20 DEGREES CELCIUS
FRACTIONAL DISTILATION
- MORE THAN ONE SUBSTANCE IS SEPARATED
- EXAMPLE
- MORE THAN ONE SUBSTANCE IS SEPARATED
