- He was not present at any significant battle, many lands were lost due to his abscence
- Examples
- Disputed succession beforehand cause problems and conflict, especially with Philip and Arthur
- John overall wasn't an able king, He lacked the political military and social skills of a good king/ his predecessor e.g Richard
- His marriage to isabelle of Angouleme caused disputes and anger of the Lusignan family, they turned against him asking Philip for aid, again causing more of a dispute between the kings.
- lead to the fight at mirebeau which was one of johns only victorious military campaigns, whilst protecting hsi mother eleanor of aquitaine whilst she was trapped within the keep
- Isabelle of Angouleme was already betrothd to Hugh of Lusignan but he waited till she became of age before fully consecrating their marriage. John married the supposidly 12 year old girl which angered one of the most powerful families, the lusignans. it alienated them and they then asked for aid from Philip in which he took the opportunity to raid Johns lands
Seige of Chateau Gaillard
- Richard built chateau Gailard by 1198, its intention was to protect and defend Rouen, Philip had captured cahtaeu gaillard and the town of Rouen by July 1204 after the weakness of john and the explotations of the Angevin line that phillip took for a number of reasons.
Phillip and his exploits
- Richards death and Johns personality as a changing position with the added factor of luck that aided Philip in his attempts to recapture land and power
- Philip had exploited the disputed succession between both Arthur and John to "wring concessions" out of the angevin family and extend his feudal authority
- The disute between arthur and john was mainly based on their claims to the throne, Arthur was the son of both Richard and Johns older brother Geoffrey and so he had a claim.
- Philip invested Arthur with the continental lands and agreed peace with john at Le Goulet. Philip gained recognition of his suzerainty and Johns vassalage, a relief of 20,000 marks and county of Evreux in Normandy. This was in the Treaty of Le Goulet 1200
- Philip exploited the Angouleme marriage and the dispute with the lusignans. Philip took the opportuinty to assert his suzerainty, therefore leaving john with less authoirty and power, this combined with the personality of the king was a bad combination and lost john Normandy and urther lands throughout his reign
- Philips overall geowing opporunties, luck and skill made him a lrage problem for John and was a large factor in the loss of normandy. He only became more of a problem later along in JOhns reign
Richards previous actions that affceted the empire for john
- his initial relationship with philip??
finance???? of nboth philip and john???
