atoms and elements

Map content
atoms and elements
atoms contain protons ,neutrons and electrons
protons have a positive charge and electrons have a negative charge making the atom neutral
neutrons have no charge
when atoms are chemically joined they become an element
elements can have up to eight shells
when atoms join together a reaction is produced because of electrons adding onto another shell
periodic table
- all of the elements are on this table are ordered by there atomic number
- all the elements in group one have one outer shell
- it lists the elements in groups. they do this by grouping it with similar elements and their properties
- group 7 are called halogens
atoms have a nucleus and this is made up of protons and nuetrons
protons have the same amount of number as electrons
how to read an element
- the biggest number is always going to be the mass
- the smaller number is always going to be the protons which is equal to the amount of neutrons
- to find out neutrons you minus big from small
- the symbol is always in the middle
- be careful because sometimes the symbol is completely different to the name of the element
when two elements are chemically joined it is called a compound
the compounds always have there formulae
for example you would write it like this magnesium + oxygen (arrow) magnesium oxide
Mg + 02 (arrow) Mg0
