1.14 - Need for Computer Systems

  1. Open source: software is free and openly available to everyone.

    • Code is published to allow others to use and modify, and then release as long a the original creator gets credits.
    • Communities of developers develop software and support users, so therefore better support group and less bugs.
    • Examples: LibreOffice, Linux, Chromium, etc.
  2. Bespoke: software (custom made) us specially designed and written for a single organisation or group of users

    • Businesses / scientific projects will often need bespoke software as required software may not already be available.
  3. Off-The-Shelf: developed by companies and then released to the consumer. This would include standard office packages (e.g. Microsoft Office, etc.)

    • You can buy and use but not modify.
