Mechanical Properties Of Materials

  1. Stress

    • Stress = Force Divided by Cross Sectional Area (Internal reactive forces transmitted through the material subjected to loading)
      • 2 Types of Stress = Normal Stress and Shear Stress
        • Unit for Stress = Pascal
        • Strain = Dimensionless is the amount of elongation per unit length
  2. Youngs Modulus of Elasticity

    • Youngs Modulus is the measure of how Rigid or Stiff a material is
      • Tensile Testing = Tensile tests can tell us a number of material properties
        • Tensile tests can tell us that Strain and Stress are proportional to one another
          • Can also tell us the Elastic or yield point, As in if the load is removed before it reaches a certain stress level the material will go back to its original form. Also known as " Elastic Behaviour"
            • UTS = Point at which the load bearing ability of the specimen peaks. If more is added to material this will result in load bearing capacity of the material being diminished
              • Ductile Materials will begin to neck an then Break
                • Breaking or Fracture Strength
              • Brittle Materials will fracture
  3. Ductility: The point of which the specimen will break
