Reality Vs Appearance

  1. Lady Macbeth encourages Macbeth to appear to be good so that then nobody suspects that he planned to of killed Duncan.

    • "look like th'innocent flower, But be the serpent under't"
      • The serpent links Lady Macbeth t Satan who tempted Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
  2. Macbeth knows that he has to have a "false face" to hide his murderous acts.

    • When he sees Banquos ghost, his face is "the very painting" of his fear and betrays his feelings.
      • People can be deceptive, but the play shows that their true natures come out in the end.
  3. The witches chat "Fair is foul and foul is fair" suggests that things appear good but are actually evil.

    • Macbeth uses a paradox "Nothing is but what is not" these paradoxes create uncertainty - they show that nobody can tell whats real.
  4. Some of the characters trust to much in appearances.

    • Duncan trusts Macbeth and then ends up diving for it. When the happened, Duncan says " There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face." He believes that there is o way in trying to find out what someone is really like.
