Ionisation Energy

  1. Definition

    • The energy required to remove one electron from each atom in one mole of gaseous atoms to form one mole of gaseous 1+ ions
  2. Factors affecting ionisation energy

    • Atomic radius
      • The more shells, the further the outer electrons are from the nucleus, the less attraction
    • Nuclear charge
      • The more protons, the greater the nuclear charge, the greater the attraction
    • Electron shielding
      • Inner shells repel outer shells. The more inner shells, the greater the shielding effect
  3. Successive I.E

    • Energy required to remove one more electron from the ion
    • Each successive IE is greater than the last
    • Plotting successive IE
      • Evidence
        • Number of shells
        • Number of electrons in each shell
