TRANSIENT RESPONSE

  1. The response in time of a control system is usually divided into two parts:

    • Transient response
      • Part of the response in time that tends to zero when the time becomes very large (∞)
        • Its amplitude and duration must be kept within tolerable or prescribed limits
      • Significant part of the dynamic behavior of the system
    • Steady state response
      • Part of the total response that remains after the transient has faded
        • Indicates the final accuracy of the system
          • There is usually a steady state error
            • The output does not exactly match the desired reference
  2. Every control system presents it before reaching the steady state response. It exhibits damped oscillations before reaching its stable state.

    • Affected by the initial conditions
  3. Characteristics

    • 2. Delay time (Td)
    • 3. Settling time (Ts)
    • 4. Lifting Time (Tr)
    • 5. Peak time (Tp)
    • 1. Maximum Overshoot (Mp)
  4. Behavior in damping factors

    • Underdamped
    • Critically damped
    • Overdamped
    • Undamped
  5. Analysis before a single step input

    • First order systems
    • Second order systems
      • Behavior in damping factors
