RAM and ROM

1. RAM

   • Volatile
     • Data is lost when power is switched off
   • Random Acess Memory
   • Stores data and instructions currently in use
   • Expandable
     • Possible to add more RAM
   • Virtual memory is used when it is full

2. ROM

   • Read Only Memory
   • Stores instructions to start up the computer
     • Uses bootstrap loader
     • Contains BIOS
       • Basic Input Output System
         • Loads operating sytem
         • Powers up computer
         • Controls imput/output operations
     • Responsible for POST
       • Power On Self Test
         • Checks hardware components are working properly
       • Performed by BIOS
   • Non-volatile
     • Data is retained without power
   • Cannot be expanded
