1. star

   • good security of data as all data is controlled by the central node the file server
     • does not have to pass through nodes other than transmitting and receiving node
   • easy to add new nodes
   • each node of the network is connected to a central node, which may be computer file server or a hub
   • better reliability, this is because of one cable has a problem the remaining nodes will continue to operate
   • File server - CONNECTED TO MULITPLE COMPUTERS AND A PRINTER, NETWORK LOOKS LIKE A STAR

2. bus

   • Ethernet
   • the nodes of a network are each connected to a bus
     • the nodes of a network include workstations, printers and what not
     • the cable sends the data along
   • terminators at either end
     • terminates data, puts it in the bin
   • a file server is the computer on the network that stores the files used by other work stations
     • a larger data base may be stored on the file server
   • if the work station address matches that contained in the message the work station processes the message
   • the speed of the network will be slow if there are large numbers of nodes
   • dis ad
     • network performance goes down as the load goes up
     • poor reliability, if the bus has problems the whole network will be unusable
     • all reliant on the main cable, if that goes down then the whole network goes down
     • cable failure is difficult to isolate
   • the bus cable carries transmitted messages along the cable
     • as the message arrives at each work station
       • the work station computer checks the destination address contained in the message to see if it matches its own
         • if the address does not match the work station does nothing more
   • relatively easy to expand
     • sends data in both directions
       • a simple network with less cabling than others
