SPRING

  1. As he had anticipated, winter finally passed

    • The ice began to thaw and break up audibly
      • Thoreau, as well, began to thaw and feel his spirituality becoming more lively
        • This excited him very much
  2. Walden pond took the longest of all ponds to melt, but did not take that long

    • Thoreau takes temperature readings of the water in different parts of each pond
      • He did this show how ice in shallow waters breaks quicker than deeper waters
  3. A part of nature's thaw from winter to spring occurred in the railroad bank that rand alone a side of the pond

    • He enjoyed watching the sand and clay flowing down the bank like lava
      • It ran in various forms and sometimes looked like blood vessels and sometimes looked lie leaves
        • Thoreau believed this was nature's way of showing new life and that the patterns are nature's master pattern
          • He compared these pattern's to the human body, finding they are similar
  4. He felt like the world was being reborn

    • Thoreau feels deeply as though he was a part of this thawing/rebirth process
      • He found many examples of nature's rebirth such as the first sparrow of spring as well as hawks
        • The geese also returned and even startled Thoreau
        • He also pays attention the vegetation, such as the pitch-pines and shrub-oaks becoming greener
  5. Thoreau believes spring can teach men forgiveness and how to treat each other well

    • He also believes spring proves immortality
      • Also that nature can make someone feel alive again
        • After two years and two months, Thoreau leaves Walden
