Week 2 cont.

  1. cortical processes in colour perception

    • is there a specialised colour centre in the brain that is responsible for colour perception? - cerebral chromatopsia suggests there is - patients with cerebral chromatopsia perceive the world to be shades of grey - patients still have access to wavelength info but cannot consciously perceive colour
      • Trichromatic stage - retina/photoreceptors - colour opponent stage = ganglion cells/LGN - primary visual cortex V1 - blobs = small patches of cells that respond to the colour of stimulus (physical wavelength) - area V4 - cells respond to perceived colour
        • single cell recording - V1 cellos respond to wavelength
          • hadjikhani et al 1998 - investigated areas of brain more activate by coloured stimulus than black/white stimulus - findings - areas V1. V2, V3 activate - also area V8 activated - colour after effects - findings only V8 active - suggests V8 might be site of colour consciousness
