STORAGE DEVICES
Memory Stick
- Solid-State Medium .Uses a card reader to read data on it. Type of access = Direct/Random . Used in Digital cameras ,Palm Tops , Mobile Phones
- Advantages: Small & portable storage media. Holds more data than CD and Floppy Easy to steal and lose
- Disadvantages: More expensive than other types of storage (£ per mb)
Random Access memory
- Random Access Memory known as RAM Used to store BIOS instructions It is Volatile (it loses it's memory when PC switched off) Stores programs in current use Random Access memory Has no moving parts Holds a small amount of bytes Can store 4gb of data in 1 module
Read Only Memory
- Read Only Memory known as ROM Used to store BIOS instructions It is Non-volatile (doesn't lose it's memory) Random Access Memory known as RAM Used to store BIOS instructions It is Volatile (it loses it's memory when PC switched off) Stores programs in current use Random Access memory Has no moving parts Holds a small amount of bytes Can store 4gb of data in 1 module Read Only Memory Has no moving parts Holds data that does not need to be changed Used in program cycles in washing machines Used for program instruction in game consoles Holds a small amount of bytes
Pendrive
- Solid-State Medium Does not require a card reader, uses USB port Type of access = Direct/Random
- Used for transferring files from one PC to another Small & portable storage media Holds more data than DVD Have a durable solid (robust) state design Pen drives have no moving parts
- Advantages: Faster access to data More secure as biometric data can be incorporated Don’t need specialist hardware/software for pen drives
- Disadvantages: Easy to steal and lose . More expensive than other types of storage (£ per mb) Most USB pen drives do not include a write-protect mechanism
CD
- Advantages: Has faster transfer rate than Floppy disk Shows video and sound unlike a book .Cheaper to guy than magnetic media The media can be unreadable if scratched Cheaper CD's need to be stored carefully
- Used to store audio mp3 files Transferring files from one PC to another
- Optical Storage Medium Can hold 700mb of data Type of access = Direct/Random Used to distribute software Used to store reference books Used to distribute games
- Disadvantages: Requires a PC to run it Difficult to highlight or annotate text .Limited in the amount of space it stores than Internet Slower transfer rate than Hard Disk Requires a PC to run i
- Types: CDR, CDROM, CDRW
DVD
- Digital Versatile Disc Optical Storage Medium Type of access = Direct/Random
- Used to distribute software Used to store reference (encylopedia) books with multimedia content . Used to distribute games Used to store series of video files Transferring files from one PC to another
- Advantages: Has faster transfer rate than Floppy disk Less waste of paper than using a book.Has a faster access time than the internet Cheap to produce and replace Can't delete data from it
- Disadvantages: Difficult to highlight or annotate text Limited in the amount of space it stores than Internet .Slower transfer rate than Hard Disk Requires a PC to run it
- Types: DVDR, DVDROM,DVDRW, DVD DL
Blue Ray
- Optical Storage Medium Type of access = Direct/Random .Can store around 200gb of data on each .more data than CD/DVD/HD DVD and Solid State devices
- Advantages: Gaining a lot of popularity Created to last longer and resist scratching More expensive to produce than other Optical storage devices
- Disadvantages: It takes a while for the disc to load . Need separate player
