Computer systems and reliability

  1. AVAIL - The percentage of the time the system will be available to the user or customer but takingout any planned downtime.

  2. MTTF - Mean Time To Failure is the average number of hours the system can run before something breaks. Usually for hardware for a server

  3. Testing tries to break the system to find a fault within it.When a system is tested many elements of it may work but some may fail when unexpected data is entered.

  4. Redundancy - Critical parts are duplicated so if certain parts fail the sub system takes over.

  5. Hardware Redundancy - If something breaks another part can be used.

  6. Data Redundancy - Duplicate data in more than one place so if something happens to that data another one can take over.

    • Software Redundancy - Used for more crucial applications.
      • Backing Up Procedures - Helps avoid failure by backing up crucial files and data.
