System Architechture and Memory

  1. CPU

    • Process
      • Fetch
        • Fetchs code from the RAM
      • Decode
        • Decodes the information
      • Execute
        • Completes the task the information contained
    • Cores
      • The more cores that are added the faster the CPu will fetch, decode and execute code
  2. Volatile

    • RAM
      • Random Access Memory
        • stores information but loses it one the PC is turned off
  3. Cache

    • 3 levels
      • Level 1
        • Faster but has the least amount of storage
      • Level 2
        • Slower that Level one but has more storage
      • Level 3
        • The slowest out of the 3 levels but has the most storage
  4. Non-Volatile

    • ROM
      • Read only Memory
        • Store the boot up system of a PC, does not lose its data when the PC is turned off
  5. Register

    • small amounts of high-speed memory contained within the CPU.
      • Examples: the address of the next instruction to be executed the current instruction being decoded the results of calculations
  6. Clock

    • The CPU contains a clock which is used to coordinate all of the computer's components. The clock sends out a regular electrical pulse which synchronises (keeps in time) all the components.
  7. Buses

    • A bus is a high-speed internal connection. Buses are used to send control signals and data between the processor and other components.
  8. Virtual Memory

    • an operating system that enables a computer to be able to compensate shortages of physical memory by transferring pages of data from random access memory to disk storage
