Co-ordinate Geometry
Cartesian system
- It is used to describe the position of a point in a plane
- It is denoted by x,y
- The lines are called the coordinate axes
- The coordinate axes divide the plane into 4 quadrants
- The point of intersection of axes is called origin
- The coordinate axes divide the plane into 4 quadrants
- The lines are called the coordinate axes
- It was developed by René Déscartes
Requirements
- To locate we require two perpendicular lines (horizontal and vertical)
- The horizontal line is called x-axis
- Distance from X axis is called its ordinate
- The vertical line is called y-axis
- Distance from y axis is called its abscissa
- The horizontal line is called x-axis
- To locate we require two perpendicular lines (horizontal and vertical)
Coordinates of points
- In the first coordinate coordinates of point is (+,+)
- In the second quadrant coordinates of point are (-,+)
- In the third quadrant coordinates of point are (-,-)
- In the fourth quadrant coordinates of point are (+,-)
Equations
- If x≠y
- (x,y)≠(y,x)
- If x=y
- (x,y)=(y,x)
- If x≠y
