IDEs

  1. editor

    • the part where you type your code
  2. automatic formatting

    • simple > identifying after an IF
      • advanced > close brackets and speech marks automatically
  3. automatic line numbering

  4. automatic colour coding

    • strings and known key words
    • advances > recognise variables from earlier in your code
  5. linker/ loader

    • load multiple source files and link them together
  6. libraries

    • collections of pre-made routines that can be used by programmers
  7. routines/ subroutines

    • take functionality and move them to separate functions or subroutines
  8. standard functions

    • built in functions that don't require defining, or libraries being imported
      • e.g. print(), input(), int()
  9. debugger

    • steps through the code line by line allowing the programmer to view how the code executes and spot if the wrong line is running
  10. syntax error detection

    • highlighted
  11. error diagnostics

    • syntax > highlight
    • runtime > trace the source
  12. tracing

    • debugging tool
      • creates a log of what happens while a program is running
  13. break points

    • a breakpoint is a point in the code at which the program pauses and the programmer can inspect the contents of variables to see if they are as expected
  14. variable watch

    • real time contents of every variable used by the program
  15. memory inspector

    • allows the programmer to view the contents of memory locations as the program runs, to help spot errors
  16. statement completion

    • suggestions made while you type
      • e.g. showing available functions
  17. code optimisation

    • identifying is code is unreachable
    • identifying if a variable is never used
    • identifying if a particular method of doing something would use more processor cycles than necessary
  18. built-in compiler/ interpreter

    • allow you to compile and run the application directly from the IDE interface
