Electronic structure

  1. Electronic structure

    • First electron shell holds 2 electons, any others holds 8
      • E.g Argon has 18 electrons, the electronic structure would be 2, 8, 8
      • You would be expected to be able to draw this. The electron number is the atomic number, so just out that in shells - also just in case add on the protons and neutrons in the middle
  2. Key words (should be obvious knowledge if not memrise all of it)

    • Atom - smallest possible part of an element
    • Proton - sub-atomic particle in nucleus, mass = 1 & charge = +1
    • Neutron - sub-atomic particle in nucleus, mass = 1 & charge = 0
    • Electron - sub-atomic particle, moves around nucleus in shells, mass = 0 & charge = -1
    • Shell - area around nucleus where electrons are found (also called energy level)
    • Nanometre - 1x10(-9 squared) used for tiny measurements
