NS vs. AS
Natural Selection
- Natural Selection is the process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring
- A mutation is a change in the usual DNA sequence at a particular gene locus
- Adaptation is a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment
- Natural Selection requires a struggle for existence, variation and inheritance to be present in an organism
- EX.) A giraffe not being tall enough to reach its food on a tree
Artificial Selection
- Artificial selection is the identification by humans of desirable traits in plants and animals
- Pro: elite offspring w/ desired traits. Con: decreases genetic variation
- 2.) Gene Therapy - an experimental form of treatment that uses gene transfer of genetic material into the cell of a patient to cure the disease
- Pro: prevents/cures genetic disorder Con: uncertain effect
- 3.) Gene Modification - a technique to change the characteristics of a plant, animal or micro-organism by transferring a piece of DNA from one organism to a different organism
- Pro: enhance of nutrition Con: unnatural; may be unsafe
