1. THE BASICS

   • What is a robot?
     • It is a programmable multipurpose machine; programmed to perform a wide range of jobs (moving materials, parts, tools or specialized devices) and carry out tasks without human supervision. Thanks to its characteristcs, it can interact with the sorrounding environment
   • Mechanical structure of a robot
     • Movable structure: the mechanical segments that form the robot
     • Drive mechanism: Actuators that move the mechanical structure
     • Sensing technology: this monitors and measures internal and external parameters. In includes sensors that help the robot interact with the environment around it
     • Controlling device: this is the brain of the robot; it makes decisions based on information processing
     • Power source: this provides the electricity needed for the robot and all its mechanisms to work.
