1. portable hard disk

   • capacity is 500GB to 1TB
   • its main use is supplementary storage for a PC or portable storage where high capacity is required.
   • advantages are: Cheap medium providing good storage capability. Fast write speeds, through slower than internal hard drives. Good reliability providing it treated appropriately when moved around.
   • the disadvantages are not as durable when compared to solid state drives due to having moving parts. Can be affected by heat and magnetic fields

2. internal hard drive

   • the capacity is 500GB to 3TB
   • a typical use is Inside a personal computer as secondary storage
   • the advantages are Cheap medium providing vast storage capability. Fast write speeds, through slower than solid state drives. Good reliability providing it is not moved around.
   • the disadvantages are Not portable as built in a computer. Not durable due to having lots of moving parts.

3. Optical (CD/DVD)

   • the capacity is CD – 700MB, DVD – 4.7GB
