Models of Memory
Multi-store model created by Atkinson and Schriffin (1968)
- It proposes we have 3 stores of memory:
- Sensory store
- Information from the environment which we don't really think about
- Short-term store
- If you pay attention and think about something then information will be encoded and will pass into the STM
- Long-term store
- When information is rehearsed and processed further it will enter the LTM, where it can potentially remain forever
- Sensory store
- It proposes we have 3 stores of memory:
Studies to support the multi-store model
- 1. Primary effect: Participants remember words are the beginning of lists rather that those in the middle. This is due to them being rehearsed better in STM and transferring them to LTM
- 2: Regency Effect: Items at the end of lists are also better recalled than the middle because they will have just been memorised as they are the last items to be said
