Intro To Knowledge Management

  1. types

    • tacit
      • Why it is important
        • Experienced Employees hold huge amounts of tacit knowledge required to complete processes on a daily basis. If they are not available, it leaves a knowledge gap in the company. Processes would slow down affecting the bottom line of the organisation.
      • Tacit knowledge is intuitive knowledge that is largely experience based. It is hard to communicate and deeply rooted in action.
      • The challenge is to identify which elements of tacit knowledge can be captured and made explicit.
    • explicit
      • Explicit knowledge is easy to communicate, store, and distribute and is the knowledge found in books, on the web, and other visual and oral means. eg. notice boards, emails, notepads, water cooler conversations, company website, blogs, social media, whiteboard diagrams
      • The greatest challenge with explicit knowledge involves ensuring that people have access to what they need; important knowledge is stored; knowledge is reviewed, updated, or discarded.
  2. Why do we need knowledge management?

    • information overload or gaps in decision-making can handicap managers, putting in place knowledge management systems facilitates better, more informed decisions.
    • employees who leave the organisation leaves a knowledge gap.
  3. how does it work in companies

    • Importation, Integration and Exportation
      • 1.Receive new data from devices or user input, the data is added to databases
        • 2. Convert the data to OWL(Web Ontology Language)
          • 3.Create the OWL ontological model
            • 4. Export data to the ontology database for usage by the application
  4. What is it?

    • Knowledge management is a dynamic cyclical process of knowledge. Knowledge is created, then stored, it is received, then used in decision making which creates new knowledge.
