Computer Security

  1. Firewall

    • Used when a program is trying to connect to the internet it asks you if you want to send some data packets to a device
    • Controls when a program recives or tries to send packets
    • Prevents harmful data
    • Protects your computer from intruders and untrusted software
    • A firewall controls the flow of data packets (sending and receiving) of programs
    • You need to controle the flow of data packets because you dont want a rouge bit of software to start keylogging you and sending data to someone you dont know
    • Important if you are at work becuase there may be a peice of malware on the computers that is trying to send data packets to an anonymous computer that may contain sensitive data
  2. Anti-Virus

    • Protects against malware
    • Scans the computer periodically
    • Needs updating often
    • Quaranties files or programs that are infected so it cant infect other files
    • You need your antivirus to upadte often becuase there are new viruses being found every day and you need to scan your computer often because you never know when you if you have a virus
    • If it is not up to date new viruses will bypass your antivirus so thats why you need to keep it up to date
    • You need it if you are in a work or school place were people can accidentaly infect the whole network and maybe even make a botnet
  3. Passwords

    • Phishing is a term used for when someone tries to get your information using fake websites
    • A secure password has letters in both cases numbers and symbols
    • Minimum of 8 letters for a secure password
  4. Encryption

    • Has an encryption key that helps a program decrypt the datapacket
    • 256Bit encryption takes 3x10(To the power of 51) years to bruteforce
    • One of the first types of encryption was the cizer cipher
    • Https means that the website is secure and is encrypted (also for passwords) and not trying to phish your passwords or information but not all websites need it because it might not be sending data back to the server it doesnt (Websites like paypal and amazon would need it because you put very important information in them everyday such as bank details, email adresses and passwords)
    • When you send data packets that are encypted someone cant read it
    • You might purchase something of amazon but you have to be careful and make sure it is a https links so it is encyrpteded and your not sending your information to some phising scammer
  5. Virus

    • Viruses can be discised as trusted programes but they are actually untrusteded
