Secondary Storage

  1. Solid state (SSD)

    • Used in high end performance computers
      • Data transfer speed is higher
        • It doesn't have to rely on the CPU and RAM as much
    • Used in phones
      • It's very portable and durable so ideal for phones as they move around.
        • They're durable because they have not moving part that will break
      • Data transfer doesn't require as much energy. It's naturally quick so it doesn't put a load onto the CPU and RAM.
    • They are more expensive so you can't get as much memory capacity for the same amount of money as a different type of storage
    • They have a limited read and write span and wear out after a while. Shorter than other storage types
  2. Magnetic (HDD)

    • Used in Desktop PCs and servers.
      • It's cost effective compared to SSD so you can get more memory and a higher capacity for the same amount of money.
      • They're plugged into the mains so the don't need power efficient storage
    • It takes up more energy and isn't power efficient so isn't ideal for portable devices that run on battery.
  3. Optical (CD/DVD/BluRay)

    • Uses lasers to read and write data
      • Mainly used for films, music, games and programs
    • Not very durable. They can easily be scratched resulting in some errors in the data
