Godden & Baddeley (Key Study for CDT) Evaluation

  1. GENERALISABILITY

    • The study can not be generalised to the whole population as only a small sample of 18 divers were used. Since it was only divers that were used in the experiment, we would be able to generalise to the target population (other divers.)
  2. RELIABILITY

    • The study is somewhat reliable as it has quite a high level of controls. However, other factors such as the weather, meant that there was not complete control over everything. It was a field experiment so it would have been quite easy to repeat.
  3. APPLICATION

    • The study can be applied to real life as it shows us that cues play a vital role when we are trying to recall information.
  4. VALIDITY

    • The study used a field method, therefore the participants would have been showing naturalistic behaviour as they were in a real life setting rather than an artificial one, therefore giving the study high ecological validity. However, other confounding variables such as the weather could have had an affect on the overall results, therefore it is not completely valid.
  5. ETHICS

    • The study did not break any ethical guidelines.
