Appearance VS Reality
Dramatic Tension caused by the theme of appearance vs reality
- Most characters know Iago as "Honest Iago" however the audience can see Iago's true colours and this creates dramatic tension with the audience which further emphasis the dramatic irony in the play
Appearance vs. reality is a major theme in Othello, in which some characters are not what they may seem to be. Appearance vs. reality goes with deception. Shakespeare interestingly shows the theme of appearance vs. reality and deception through the character Iago who uses his manipulative skills to trick everyone in the play.
Desdemona
- Desdemona acts how she truly is however Iago makes her appear as a cheater and a liar. Eventually Othello kills her because of Iago's plan for revenge.
Emilia
- Emilia also takes the handkerchief and gives it to Iago.
- As Iago's wife, Emilia is a main part of Iago's plan. Emilia gets Cassio and Desdemona to meet together and Iago makes it appear to Othello as if they are having an affair but in reality they are not.
- All her actions lead to her death
Brabantio
- Iago and Rodrigo inform him that Desdemona has married Othello; her appearance to Brabantio changes; he sees her as wicked and does not consider her as a maiden anymore, when in reality she hasn't changed at all and has only got married.
- Brabantio is Iago's first victim.
